Privacy Policy

GeoPin uses the device’s geolocation technology to obtain the user’s current position. The app uses geographic coordinates, such as latitude and longitude, to allow users to save a location and, where applicable, to obtain a readable address through the Nominatim reverse geocoding service based on OpenStreetMap data.

GeoPin may also display the current position and saved pins on an interactive map based on OpenStreetMap, shown inside the app through the Leaflet library.

1 Data processed

GeoPin may process the following data:

  • device location data, such as latitude and longitude;
  • address or location information obtained through reverse geocoding from the coordinates;
  • any data entered manually by the user, such as labels or notes associated with a saved location;
  • technical data needed to display the map, such as loading map tiles through OpenStreetMap or compatible map services.

2 Purposes of processing

The data is used exclusively to:

  • detect the current position of the device;
  • save and show a location selected by the user;
  • display the current position and saved pins on an interactive OpenStreetMap-based map through Leaflet;
  • convert geographic coordinates into an address or readable location description through Nominatim/OpenStreetMap;
  • improve the user experience within the app’s location features.

3 How geolocation works

GeoPin accesses the device location only after the user has granted permission. If permission is not granted, some location-based features may be unavailable or work in a limited way.

4 Map display with OpenStreetMap and Leaflet

GeoPin may display the user’s current position and saved pins on an interactive map based on OpenStreetMap, integrated into the app through the Leaflet library.

When the map is displayed, the device may download map tiles from OpenStreetMap or from compatible map services configured in the app. These requests are necessary to correctly display the map on the device.

OpenStreetMap provides collaborative map data. For this reason, some information shown on the map, such as roads, places, boundaries, points of interest, or other geographic details, may not always be complete, accurate, or up to date.

5 Reverse geocoding with Nominatim/OpenStreetMap

To show an address associated with geographic coordinates, GeoPin may send latitude and longitude to the Nominatim service, which uses OpenStreetMap data to return a readable address or geographic reference.

GeoPin uses this service only when the user requests the current position or saves a new point. After the request, the information obtained is stored locally on the user’s device. The app does not make continuous, automatic, or massive requests to the Nominatim service.

The information returned by Nominatim/OpenStreetMap may not always be accurate, complete, or up to date. In some cases, the address, city, street, house number, postal code, or other geographic details may be approximate, missing, or may not exactly match the detected position. GeoPin displays this information as returned by the external service and cannot guarantee its absolute accuracy.

6 Legal basis

The processing of location data is based on the user’s consent, expressed by granting location permission on the device. The user can revoke this permission at any time from the operating system settings.

The map display and reverse geocoding features are used to provide the functions requested by the user within the app, such as viewing saved pins and converting coordinates into a readable address.

7 Data retention

Locations saved by the app are stored on the user’s device until they are manually deleted or the app is uninstalled, unless otherwise expressly stated within the app.

GeoPin does not store saved locations on its own servers. Data associated with pins, such as coordinates, address, labels, or notes, remains stored locally on the user’s device.

8 Data disclosure

When the reverse geocoding feature is used, the location coordinates required for the request may be sent to the Nominatim/OpenStreetMap service solely to obtain the corresponding address or nearest geographic reference.

When the map is displayed, the device may make requests to OpenStreetMap servers or compatible map services to download the map tiles required for displaying the map.

GeoPin does not send to Nominatim any notes, personal labels, or other content manually entered by the user, unless a different feature is expressly indicated in the app.

GeoPin does not use this data for advertising or profiling purposes.

9 User rights

The user may at any time:

  • deny or revoke location access permission;
  • delete locations saved in the app;
  • manage or remove locally stored data through the app’s available functions or through the device settings;
  • request information about the processing of data, where applicable.

10 Safety notice and use while driving

GeoPin is designed to help users save and find locations, but it must not be used by the driver while driving or in any situation where using the device may cause distraction, danger, or a violation of applicable laws.

Users are responsible for using the app safely, carefully, and in compliance with the local laws of the country or geographic area where they are located. The app should only be used when it is safe to do so, for example when the vehicle is stopped and in compliance with applicable rules.

Any improper, dangerous, or unlawful use of the app, including use while driving or in unsafe conditions, is the user’s responsibility.

Location information, addresses, and map data shown by GeoPin may be approximate, incomplete, or not up to date. The app must not be used as the sole tool for driving, navigation, emergency, or safety decisions.

11 Changes to this policy

This policy may be updated over time to reflect changes to the app, new features, technical adjustments, or regulatory changes.

In the case of minor changes, the new version of this policy will be made available by updating this page, with the last updated date indicated.

In the case of significant changes affecting the processing of personal data, such as the introduction of new categories of collected data, new purposes of use, or new disclosures to external services, GeoPin may inform the user through a visible notice inside the app or through the information available on the app store page.
